This is a picture of the VT Route 2B bridge crossing over the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail in St Johnsbury, VT. This buried bridge was constructed to replace a 3 span steel bridge constructed in the 1930s and had to be sized to accommodate possible future restoration of the pedestrian trail back to rail traffic as is so often the case for these types of projects. The structure has a span of 47.9 ft and rise of 26.8 ft. The existing bridge was a local landmark, so the community wanted to make sure the replacement structure was visually appealing. This was accomplished with the use of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls with colored concrete and incorporation of a decorative concrete railing to resemble the railing for the old bridge. The structure was build using precast concrete footings and an accelerated schedule to minimize the time required for a convoluted detour due to the undulating topography of the area. The project was completed ahead of schedule.

I found this while working on a buried bridge structure about half a mile away on the same trail. This structure was built in the 1960's when the the trail was built on an old rail bed. The structure has no signs of deterioration inside or out - in spite of being located below an interstate in the northern US and being subjected to deicing salts every winter. All indications are that this structure should be able to easily achieve a 100+ year service life.

The structures were built to replace a low water crossing into a community park that was frequently flooded. The buried bridges eliminated the flooding issue and also provided a signature entrance to the park. This picture was taken inside one of the structures and shows the clean lines and consistent quality of the deep corrugated plates as they are traced along the perimeter of the structure.

Barrier-free access to a historic landmark was achieved with a precision-engineered corrugated steel enclosure protecting a passenger cable incline lift on a 46% slope. The nearly 40-meter structure had to fit precisely between two fixed stations with near-zero tolerance while maintaining consistent internal clearances. ViaCon designed a modular corrugated structural plate system (8 mm) oriented perpendicular to the slope and accurately connected to both terminals. Hot-dip galvanization to DIN EN ISO 1461:2009 ensures long-term durability. Close cooperation between the architect, contractor and ViaCon enabled precise surveying, phased installation and strict quality control. The enclosure was assembled on site in just eight weeks, delivering a robust, visually coherent solution that protects the lift, improves user safety and enables barrier-free access in a sensitive heritage setting.
