NCSPA Drainage Calculator

NCSPA » NCSPA Drainage Calculator

The NCSPA Drainage Calculator helps engineers, designers, and drainage professionals estimate the required waterway area for a drainage crossing and evaluate preliminary culvert sizing using the Talbot method.

Enter the drainage area, rainfall intensity, and runoff conditions to calculate the required waterway area, then explore corrugated steel pipe and structural plate solutions. The calculator evaluates single-barrel options, same-size multiple-barrel configurations, and suggested mixed-size combinations. A custom barrel builder is also included for evaluating project-specific configurations.

Product sizes and geometry are based on the currently published NCSPA Corrugated Steel Pipe Design Manual.

Preliminary drainage sizing

NCSPA Drainage Calculator

Estimate required waterway area using the Talbot method, then screen corrugated steel pipe, pipe arch, structural plate, and deep corrugated structural plate alternatives from the currently published NCSPA Design Manual.

Talbot waterway-area method • 4 in./hr base intensity

1. Watershed inputs

Preset only. The Runoff Index remains editable.
Talbot's base equation is referenced to 4 in./hr. This calculator applies a proportional intensity factor, I / 4, when a different maximum rainfall rate is entered.
Calculator equation
Areq = C × M0.75 × (I / 4)
Areq in ft²; M in acres; I in in./hr.
Method and data notes
The Talbot calculation follows the methodology implemented in the legacy NCSPA drainage tool recreated by Mike.Round CSP waterway areas are calculated geometrically from published inside diameters and are consistent with the waterway areas listed in Table 5.1.Shop-fabricated CSP pipe-arch options use the published tabulated waterway areas.Structural-plate options use the applicable published waterway/end-area tables.Product sizing shown here is for preliminary waterway-area screening only.

Engineering limitation: this is a waterway-area screening tool, not a complete culvert hydraulic or structural design. It does not evaluate discharge, roughness, slope, inlet/outlet control, headwater, tailwater, velocity, debris, scour, fish passage, cover, live load, soil-structure interaction, durability, or required wall thickness.

2. Single-barrel alternatives

Shows up to the first three qualifying sizes in each solution class, including a separate top-three group for 15 x 5-1/2 in. deep corrugated structural plate.

Culvert Sizing and Waterway Area

The NCSPA Drainage Calculator provides a preliminary comparison of corrugated steel drainage solutions based on required waterway area. Results can be filtered by product family and evaluated as single- or multiple-barrel culvert installations.

Available product families include round corrugated steel pipe and spiral rib pipe, shop-fabricated corrugated steel pipe arches, 6 × 2 structural plate products, and deep corrugated structural plate products.

The custom barrel builder also allows users to evaluate combinations of different barrel sizes when a standard single-size configuration does not meet project needs.

Using the Results

Calculator results are intended for preliminary drainage sizing and product comparison. Final design should account for all applicable hydraulic, structural, environmental, site, installation, and regulatory requirements.

Product profiles and available sizes can vary by manufacturer. Confirm final product availability and design requirements before specifying a system.
