A Clean Crossing That Keeps the Show Moving
Before the new tunnel, St. Moritz race mornings were crowded and tense. Spectators and snowcats shared narrow paths, creating congestion and safety risks. With the corrugated steel plate tunnel designed and supplied by ViaCon Polska, people now move safely beneath the Lärchensprung slope while equipment stays above. As a result, the venue operates with more calm, speed, and confidence.
Geometry That Fits People and Snowcats
The tunnel passage measures about 427 feet long with a 29-foot span and 15-foot rise—plenty of room for both spectators and grooming vehicles. The gentle arch of the structure, crafted from corrugated steel plate, blends neatly into the hillside, preserving the slope’s natural shape while adding lasting structural strength. It’s a seamless design that fits the site and the setting.

Built on Mountain Time
Alpine weather allows little margin for delay. Crews poured foundations, assembled plates, and backfilled in sequence to keep work on schedule. Modular staging meant progress continued even when forecasts shifted. The result was a quick installation that minimized disruption to resort operations and the mountain environment, showcasing the efficiency of the steel tunnel construction.
Strong Enough for Winter’s Whiplash
Deep corrugations and zinc-coated steel deliver the stiffness and durability needed to resist moisture, frost, and thaw. Combined with proper backfill and compaction, the tunnel, formed from corrugated steel plates, maintains strength through extreme conditions—ensuring the track above remains stable for many seasons to come.

Light Touch, Big Impact
Because lightweight plates ship efficiently and assemble easily, the project reduced heavy lifts and staging space. The tunnel’s long service life and recyclability add sustainability benefits, proving that smart steel solutions can protect both the mountain and the bottom line while using corrugated plate for the tunnel.
Why Steel Was the Smart Play
Steel brought speed, precision, and performance to the project. Fabrication and delivery were predictable, installation was rapid, and the finished structure is built to last. For alpine resorts and beyond, this project shows why a tunnel crafted from corrugated steel plate remains the trusted choice for reliable access and enduring value.
